Wallflower Devotional: Come Closer, You Belong

🌿 Wallflower Devotional: Come Closer, You Belong

Scripture:
🌿 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
—Psalm 34:18

🌿 The Wallflower’s View

Ever feel like you’re standing on the edge, watching everyone else seem so into it—the singing, the praying, the Bible verses?
You wonder…

  • Is God even for me?

  • What if I’m not good enough?

  • What if I mess up too much to belong here?

Maybe you’ve been told you need to be more outgoing, more “churchy,” more perfect. Or maybe you’ve been hurt before—by people who said they followed God but didn’t act like Him.

Here’s the good news: God sees you.
He doesn’t just see the people in the front row, with their hands raised and prayers flowing. He sees the one leaning against the back wall, quiet, unsure, wondering if there’s space for them at His table.

And He whispers:
“Come closer. You belong here.”

🌿 A Closer Look: Jesus Loved the Edges

Jesus spent time with the wallflowers of His world:

  • A woman too ashamed to show her face (John 4)

  • A tax collector hiding in a tree (Luke 19)

  • A man covered in shame and sin (Luke 15)

Jesus didn’t say, “Come back when you’re better.”
He said, “Come as you are. I’m here for you now.”

🌿 Prayer for Wallflowers

God,
Sometimes I feel like I’m on the outside, unsure if I really belong.
Help me see that I don’t have to be perfect or loud to matter to You.
Thank You for noticing me, for calling me closer.
Help me trust that I am welcome in Your presence—just as I am.
Amen.

🌿 Wallflower Challenge

This week, try this:

  • Find a quiet moment—maybe on a walk, or lying in bed—and whisper, “God, I’m here. Help me know You’re here too.”

  • Write one thing you’re grateful for. Even a tiny thing counts—like sunshine, music, or a favorite snack.

  • If you feel brave, tell someone, “Hey, I’m kinda curious about God. What’s your story?”

🌿 Reminder Verse

πŸ’¬ “Come near to God, and He will come near to you.” —James 4:8

You’re never too far for God to reach. And you’re never too small for Him to notice.
