Hope in the Storm – May: The Garden of Her Heart

Here is the May entry for Hope in the Storm – A Maple Lane Mystery, inspired by Mother’s Day and the storms that come with memory, legacy, and healing.

Hope in the Storm – May: The Garden of Her Heart

May in Maplewood was a time of lilacs, lemonade stands, and porch-sitting. The town's hanging baskets were full, and tulips bobbed cheerfully along the sidewalks. But for Delia Harlow, owner of The Nest & Nook Antiques, the season stirred up memories like dust motes in an attic.

This would be her first Mother’s Day without her mama, Ruth, the woman who taught her everything from mixing tea blends to mending broken things with love and thread.

Delia had tried to stay busy—organizing the annual Mother’s Tea & Heirloom Show, volunteering at the church’s floral tent, even retiling the bathroom herself. But nothing softened the ache in her chest.

Meanwhile, at the Maple Lane Community Church, Ben (the town’s favorite gentle soul and unofficial fixer-of-everything) was wrestling with his own Mother’s Day storm. His mom, a missionary nurse in Africa, hadn’t been home in six years. Letters came often, but the distance still hurt. Especially when everyone else was planning brunches and flower deliveries.

When Delia’s heirloom teacup display was found shattered just days before the big event—accidentally knocked over by a rambunctious Sunday school class—she almost called the whole thing off. But then Ben showed up, quiet and kind-eyed, with a box of donated vintage teacups and a paint kit.

“I thought maybe... the broken pieces could become something new?” he said.

Together, they hosted a Kintsugi-inspired station at the tea—a place for mothers, daughters, grandmothers, and even those grieving or hoping, to glue something back together. Gilded lines of gold lacquer shimmered in the sunlight.

That Mother’s Day, Delia stood under the white tent with a tea towel in her pocket, a smile on her face, and peace in her heart. She finally realized—her mama’s garden hadn’t died with her. It had just rooted itself deeper, in every hand she held, every cup she mended, and every hope she passed on.

Scripture Reflection:

Isaiah 66:13 (NIV)
“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you…”

Journal Prompt:

What parts of your story feel broken this Mother’s Day? Where might God be helping you mend and fill those spaces with hope?
