Hope in the Storm – June: The Keepsake Key
Maplewood’s early summer hum came with lawnmowers, lemonade stands, and kids darting through sprinklers. But for Jordan Bell, the owner of Bell’s Lock & Repair, Father’s Day only meant one thing: silence. This was the second year without his dad, Harold, and no amount of sunshine could warm the spaces left behind.
Jordan hadn’t touched his dad’s old toolbox since the funeral, even though it sat just three feet from his workbench. He told himself he was “too busy,” but really, he just wasn’t ready.
Meanwhile, Tori Rae Davis had been sorting through files at the newspaper when she stumbled upon an old photo of her and her late father, Henry, standing next to the Maple Lane gazebo during a Father’s Day picnic. The memory made her smile... and ache.
Tori decided to organize a small Father’s Day Keepsake Fair, inviting folks in town to bring items that reminded them of their fathers—anything from fishing lures to cufflinks. She asked Jordan to donate a few antique locks and keys for display, even though she knew it might be a stretch.
When Jordan finally opened Harold’s toolbox to find something suitable, he discovered a small, sealed envelope tucked under the lining. In his dad’s scratchy handwriting: “To Jordan – when you’re ready to find the key.”
Inside was a note and a tiny brass key. The note spoke of pride, love, and an unfinished project—Harold’s attempt at building a miniature cedar chest. With the help of old friend and woodworker Clara, Jordan finished it, carving in the words, “Love remains.”
At the fair, Jordan displayed the chest with his father’s key, and to his surprise, people lingered there. They shared stories. They remembered.
That Father’s Day wasn’t storm-free—but it was a step toward peace. And sometimes, peace looks like a small key in a calloused hand.
Scripture Reflection:
Malachi 4:6 (NLT)
“His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers…”
Journal Prompt:
What "keys" from your past—words, memories, or keepsakes—might unlock healing this Father’s Day? Who could you honor by remembering well?
