Devotion: The Light That Clings

Devotion: "The Light That Clings"
Inspired by the hymn "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go"
Scripture: Romans 8:38-39
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

The Story:
Maggie sat alone on the worn wooden bench overlooking the lake where she and her husband used to fish. The cold wind nipped at her cheeks, but she hardly noticed. Grief had a way of numbing everything—your skin, your heart, even your sense of self.

She’d been coming here every day since Mark passed, not because it brought her comfort, but because it was where she felt most lost, and somehow that felt honest. On this particular morning, gray clouds rolled heavy above her, casting shadows over the water. It mirrored the way her heart felt—dimmed, distant, as though light had no place left to shine.

Her fingers absently traced the edges of an old hymnbook she’d found in Mark’s belongings. It fell open to a page she didn’t recognize: “O Love That Will Not Let Me Go.” She scoffed softly. Wouldn’t let me go? She felt entirely let go, floating in the emptiness.

But something about the words pulled at her—a thread unraveling her tightly wound grief. As she read the lines:
"I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain, that morn shall tearless be,"
tears blurred her vision. It wasn’t the promise of a pain-free life; it was the promise that even in the rain, a rainbow exists—whether or not you can see it.

She realized then that God’s love wasn’t absent because she felt broken. His love had been sitting beside her on that bench every day, silent but steadfast, like the sunlight hidden behind clouds. His love wasn’t something she needed to earn or even reach for—it was already wrapped around her, even in her numbness, even in her disbelief.

Moral:
God’s love is not dependent on our feelings or circumstances. It’s a love that will not let us go—not in grief, not in joy, not in doubt, not in faith. Even when we feel lost, His love has already found us.

Prayer:
Dear Lord,
Thank You for a love that clings to us even when we are too weary to hold on. In moments of doubt, grief, or fear, remind us that Your presence is constant, unshaken by the storms of life. Help us trace the rainbow through the rain, trusting that Your promises remain, even when our hearts feel heavy. Amen.

Advice:
When you find yourself drowning in life’s hardships, don’t pressure yourself to feel strong. Just sit with the truth that you are loved—fully, endlessly, unconditionally. Let that be enough for today. Let it be your light in the shadows.
