Devotion: The Unshakable Foundation
Devotion: The Unshakable Foundation
Story:
Sarah loved the little chapel on the hill. It had been a part of her life since childhood, its wooden pews and stained-glass windows standing as quiet witnesses to years of prayers, laughter, and tears. But now, after a long battle with illness, her grandfather—who had once been the chapel’s caretaker—was gone. The grief sat heavy in her chest.
One afternoon, unable to shake the weight of loss, she walked up the hill to the chapel. As she approached, she noticed something unsettling—one of the foundation stones had shifted. The chapel, built on solid ground for decades, was now showing signs of wear.
She knelt beside the stone, running her fingers over its worn surface, and whispered, “Things aren’t supposed to change like this.”
Just then, an elderly man from the congregation, Mr. Bennett, walked up the path. Seeing her distress, he sat beside her. “You know,” he said, “this stone has been here longer than I have. And it may shift, but the chapel still stands.”
Sarah wiped her eyes. “But what if it falls?”
Mr. Bennett smiled gently. “The foundation may need repair, but the faith it represents? That’s unshakable. Just like your grandfather’s faith. He’s not gone, Sarah. He’s with the Lord, standing on an eternal foundation that will never shift.”
Sarah thought of 2 Peter 3:17-18, which warned of being led astray but encouraged growth in grace. Her grandfather had lived with that kind of faith—rooted, steady, unwavering.
As she helped Mr. Bennett reposition the stone, she felt a peace settle over her. Psalm 116:15-17 came to mind: “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Her grandfather’s faith had been his offering, his legacy, and it would not be forgotten.
And as she looked up at the sky, she thought of Revelation 21:10-14, the vision of the New Jerusalem with its firm foundation. No cracks, no shifting stones—only a city built by God’s hand. One day, she would see her grandfather again, standing on that unshakable foundation.
She took a deep breath, feeling the weight of grief lift just a little. The chapel still stood, and so did her faith.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, when we feel unsteady, remind us that Your foundation never shifts. Thank You for the promise of eternity, for the saints who have gone before us, and for the grace to keep growing in faith. Help us to stand firm, even in times of change and loss. Amen.
Moral:
Faith is not about avoiding the shifting ground of life—it’s about standing firm on the foundation of Christ, knowing that His promises are unshakable.
Advice:
When grief or change makes you feel unsteady, remember the eternal foundation God has prepared. Spend time in His Word, lean on those who encourage your faith, and trust that no matter what shifts around you, God’s promises stand firm.
