A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken
Devotion: "A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken"
The Story:
The autumn air was crisp as Ellie drove up the winding mountain road, her heart heavy with doubt. Every year, her family had gathered at their old cabin to celebrate the changing seasons, sharing meals and stories, bound together by tradition. But this year was different. Her father had passed away in the spring, and since then, everything felt uncertain—fragile.
Now, the cabin stood quiet, missing the laughter and warmth that once filled its walls. Ellie’s mother had decided not to come, her brothers were busy, and her own faith felt shaken. Should traditions still matter when life keeps changing? she wondered.
As she stepped onto the porch, she found an old, familiar notebook—her father’s journal, filled with reflections on Scripture. Flipping through the pages, one passage caught her eye:
"One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord." —Romans 14:5-6
Ellie exhaled slowly, feeling the weight of the words. Maybe it wasn’t about the tradition itself, but about the heart behind it.
Later that evening, she built a fire in the old stone hearth. As the flames crackled, she read another passage from her father’s journal:
"Since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire.’” —Hebrews 12:28-29
A kingdom that cannot be shaken. Ellie closed her eyes. Everything in her world had shifted, but God’s kingdom remained steady. The traditions she clung to weren’t about keeping the past alive—they were about remembering the unchanging presence of God in every season.
As the fire warmed the room, she turned to Isaiah 66:22:
"As the new heavens and the new earth that I make will endure before me," declares the Lord, "so will your name and descendants endure."
Her father’s faith had been part of something eternal, something that outlasted sorrow, change, and even life itself. And as she read Revelation 21:1-4, she felt the promise in her bones:
"Then I saw 'a new heaven and a new earth,' for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away... He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
Tears welled up, but they weren’t just grief anymore. They were hope. Life changed, but God’s promises did not. One day, sorrow itself would pass away, replaced by something new and unshakable.
The next morning, Ellie made breakfast in the old kitchen, setting the table like her father used to. She wasn’t clinging to the past anymore—she was carrying faith forward, into the unshakable kingdom of God.
Moral:
God’s kingdom is eternal, unshakable, and enduring. Traditions may change, loved ones may pass, and life may feel uncertain, but our faith rests in something far greater than the shifting seasons of this world.
Advice:
- When change unsettles you, anchor yourself in the unchanging promises of God.
- Don’t hold onto traditions just for the sake of nostalgia—use them as a way to worship God and reflect His faithfulness.
- If your faith feels shaken, remember God’s kingdom cannot be moved (Hebrews 12:28-29).
Prayer:
"Father, in a world that constantly shifts, help me to stand firm in Your unshakable kingdom. When grief and uncertainty cloud my heart, remind me of Your promises. Let my faith be rooted in what is eternal, not in the temporary things of this world. May I worship You in every season, trusting that You are making all things new. Amen."
